Latics Need To Stay Settled

Wigan Athletic head into next Saturdays final friendly against St. Mirren with just one win in pre-season following yesterdays defeat at League 1 club Norwich City.

With the Premier League opener against Aston Villa looming fast Latics fans are asking when will we see manager Roberto Martinez` favoured starting 11 and when will we see a 90 minute game.

Martinez so far has played a game of two halves with switching almost the entire team around at half time in each of the six friendlies, giving all the squad a run out, this may have allowed players to get some match practice but it is a little unsettling for the supporters who wonder what the gaffer is up to.

Local pride was in order on Tuesday at Deepdale when a convincing display saw the Latics come out 4-1 winners against Lancashire neighbours Preston, but even in that game there were signs that although Latics passing was slick when we lost possession we seemed vulnerable to the counter-attack.

Maybe seeing a settled side in at least one pre-season game would give the players as a team the chance to gel into the new system that Martinez has undoubtedly brought with him, maybe that game is next Saturday against St. Mirren, we will have to wait and see, but I for one hope so.

It is early days yet and this in no way is knocking Bobby, I was at Preston on Tuesday and at times our play was scintillating, I came off with a broad grin on my face, my hero is back at the club and we are attempting to play controlled, fluent football, fantastic, but I am just getting the pre-season jitters, I know we need to strengthen up front and out wide right, I think I`d be more happy if we had a couple more friendlies to play rather than just the one.
