Wigan Athletic - A biblical epic it isn`t but back in 1995 when Dave Whelan promised the Wigan public that he would take the club to the promised land of the Premiership he went out and signed three young Spanish players, current boss Roberto Martinez, Izidro Diaz and Jesus Seba and so the story began.
14 years later the Latics have been in `the Promised Land` for four seasons and with the imminent signing of Victor Moses from Crystal Palace it looks like the religious puns could well be resurrected, so to speak.
Back in 1995 though the surroundings where slightly different, when Jesus first arrived in Wigan, the club was situated at the old Springfield Park ground and the new stadium was still a vision of Whelan and his draftsmen.
Jesus found it difficult to settle in Wigan, he arrived with Roberto and Isi full of optimism about carving out a career for himself in England but though the other two flourished he found himself in and out of the side making just 11 starts and 16 substitute appearances scoring 3 goals, not being able to speak good English and suffering from home sickness affected Jesus badly, he left the Latics at the end of the 96/97 season returned to Spain and continued playing at various clubs before serious illness almost cost him his life never mind his career.
Having made a full recovery from his heart condition Jesus is still playing, he is a member of Spanish 3rd division side Endesa Andorra and he is listed on their Wikipedia page of famous players, maybe he will make an appearance at the DW Stadium for the first home league game of his friends reign at the Latics.
Former Latics caretaker manager Frank Lord once said of Jesus,: `if I had a daughter and she said she was going to marry Jesus, I`d be delighted, he`s a lovely lad`
Jesus Seba proving that Jesus was indeed a Wiganer, and now Moses?![]()
