Wigan Athletic - Are We Ready For The New Season?

Vital Latics latest poll is asking what your feelings about the impending season are, the big kick-off is just 5 days away and following the 3-1 win against SPL side St. Mirren on Saturday are we ready?

New boss Roberto Martinez has said that he would have liked at least one more game in the preseason schedule and with that in mind we might just see one or two first teamers in the reserve squad that take on Leigh Genesis tomorrow (Tuesday) at Leigh Sports Village.

Fitness wise we should be at the same level as all the over Premier League sides, the players have been back training since June and they have also been away on the now obligatory preseason training camp week in Austria.

My concern would be about the change in style and have all the players adapted to the `Martinez way` sufficiently enough for us to be competitive against Villa on Saturday?

Looking back to the two games that I have attended this preseason, Preston away and St. Mirren at the weekend, we do look very comfortable on the ball and hold possession well and in both those games we created numerous chances and scored seven goals, but it`s when we lost possession that we looked vulnerable.

Preston and to some lesser extent St. Mirren broke very fast when we lost the ball in the oppositions territory and we struggled to cope, without being disrespectful better sides might have punished us more, indeed St. Mirren forward Tom Brighton was clean through and rounded Kirkland only to fire wide of an empty net, and both the Preston and St. Mirren goals were breaks by the opposition after we had lost possession.

For me defending as team is something we need to work on in the early season and if we get this right then I believe we are in for a very exciting season, if we don`t then we could struggle.

So that`s my view, what`s yours?

The poll is available on the bottom right side of this page, just pick which option you agree with then hit the submit button, it`s that easy.

If you didn`t manage to get to the game on Saturday there are some highlights including all the goals on the media player below. Just click the play button to get it started

Latics v Wolves - Big Game Preview

There is a little bit of pressure starting to mount down at the Latics, no win in seven games and sitting bottom of the pile, the sooner we can get a three points haul in the bag the better.

Gary Caldwell felt that his team were unlucky not to win the game at Preston on Friday never mind lose it, a wickedly deflected effort early on followed by some resolute defending kept the Latics at bay, but a failure to take two excellent chances was the downfall as we lost by the odd goal for the 7t
