Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez has spoken about the sale of midfield man Lee Cattermole to Premier League rivals Sunderland saying that it was a good deal for the club.
The Latics have received an initial £6 million with a further £2 million due in add-ons that could take the deal to £8 million over the next four years; in a press release by the club Martinez says that this is the second offer that the Latics have received and he also commented on the persistent badgering by former boss Steve Bruce through the press, he said: "The fee is a good one; it is far more than the club paid for him last year and the third highest in Wigan Athletic history.
"The initial offer from Sunderland was unacceptable as we said at the time, but they have now matched our valuation.
"The speculation about Lee has refused to go away over the last few weeks and this has been very unsettling for him and for our players."
Martinez also revealed that it was the player himself that forced his hand in agreeing to the sale, he told how having spoken to Cattermole he realised that he wanted to go and that there was disruption in the camp, he continued: "It became clear over the past days having spoken to Lee that he wanted to leave and it is very disruptive to the group when a player is clearly unhappy.
"My number one priority has to be the good of the club and it left me with a decision to make, I therefore agreed to the move for the good of the players we have at the club and who want to remain with us and help us progress to the next level."
If Cattermole started to get disruptive then it was right to get him out ![]()
