Martinez Delighted With Diame Signing

Martinez Delighted With Diame Signing

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez says he is delighted to have finally secured the transfer of midfield man Momo Diame and he says that he can be a direct replacement for Lee Cattermole.

Diame has joined the Latics from Spanish club Rayo Vallecano but the transfer has been protracted to say the least, Latics first began negotiations to bring in the Frenchman back in June and looked to have secured the deal only for there to be complications during the medical, but once this was sorted out it became a race against time to get the highly rated 22 year old clearance to play on Saturday

Diame got the go ahead to play and looks a fine prospect though lacking in fitness, Martinez was pleased to have him in the starting line up against Manchester United and praised Rayo for their efforts in getting the deal through, Martinez said: "Credit to Rayo Vallecano, we weren`t sure if he was going to be eligible, but they have pulled out all the stops at their end to get the deal rushed through in time. I also need to praise my Chief Executive Brenda Spencer and her staff because everyone has been working flat out all week on this one."

'He is a superb athlete, very tactically aware and strong in the tackle, good in the air, he has excellent composed distribution and he is a player who has the potential to really grace the Premier League

'I think everyone knows it hasn't been the easiest of transfers to complete, on a number of fronts, but sometimes that happens in football.

'All the negotiations are now finalised, both clubs are happy and we are really excited to have him here at our club.

'Not only is he a really high quality player who will fit into our system and philosophy of play, but he is a highly motivated and professional person with high daily standards who is just desperate to play for Wigan Athletic and show the fans what he can do.

"He adds huge competition to the squad and gives us another dimension for our team.'
