Wigan Athletic - Dangerous Game

Wigan Athletics failure to land a striker on deadline day could spell trouble ahead as the club look to change the fortunes that have seen Roberto Martinez` men pick up just one win from 5 games with four defeats and elimination from the Carling Cup to lower league opposition.

With Hugo Rodallega the spearhead up front in Martinez` favoured lone striker system there is no quality in back-up should the Colombia international get suspended or God forbid injured with only the ineffectual Marlon King and the lumbering Jason Scotland as understudies.

It is quite alarming that the management team left it this late before attempting to bring in a striker with both Scott McDonald of Celtic and Rangers Kris Boyd targeted far too late in the day to pull off the transfer coup.

I have full faith in Roberto has a manager and I love his footballing philosophy but the fascination with midfield players I find a little hard to understand, we have a plethora of players in the centre mid, we let two go in the past four days we are that overloaded and yet there was still a bid submitted for another one, Ferrie Bodde from Martinez` former club Swansea.

Bodde is still recovering from injury following ligament damage almost a year ago and he wont be fit to play for a while yet on top of that Swansea have said they wont well him and I respect that, so why put the effort into that channel?

Surely we needed to have a striker at the club, one with a bit of class and nouse to play and score at Premier League level didn`t happen, lets hope that it doesn`t come back to bite us on the bum, I for one feel this is a very dangerous game we are playing.

All it takes is a Rodders injury and we're screwed!

Charles N'Zogbia can play up front.

Totally agree with the article. To be honest our lack of striking options has left a sick feeling in my stomach. Its not good planning if we are hoped to stay in the premier league.

we're screwed anyway, tell me where are the goals going to come from, rodders cant score them all, i have supported the latics for 38 years and i have always been an optimist, its never been easy and i wouldn't have had it any other way, but this season may be are last.

Shame really. Since we got around £24 million from players leaving, Valencia (£18m), Cattermole (£6m + 2m add-ons). Plus players leaving, Watson (loan), Sib (released) etc.... We have only spent £7.9m on new players, and the quality of some of the new players seem questionable at best. Going to be a long hard season...
