Martinez Worries About International Travel

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez feels that international breaks are not the ideal way to prepare for Premier League clashes, with West Ham due at the DW stadium on Saturday the Latics will have quite a few players on international duty and only return to the club on Friday, add to this the distances that the like of Maynor Figuroa and Hendry Thomas will have travelled and you can understand where he is coming from (no pun intended), Martinez says:

'The main problem with the international break is the travelling. Too often our players have to travel from one side of the World to the other, and it's not ideal.

'Coming back on a Friday to prepare for a Premier League game the next day is something I can't understand, it doesn't seem right.

'Sometimes it is good for the player to switch off and focus on something different momentarily, and hope they all come back sharp and injury-free.

'Until they return we'll use this period as best we can to focus on the areas we need to improve with the players who are staying back.'

Latics aim to get back on track with the visit of West Ham on Saturday, who themselves have players out this week on international duty, but for Martinez his main concern is the fitness of midfield lynch-pin Hendry Thomas who after just four games has already shown how important he is going to be to the clubs success this season and this will be his second trip to Central America and back in the space of 4 weeks. Fingers crossed
