Wigan Athletic - Close Encounter of a Nugent Kind

It`s been reported by Brendan Flood Burnley FC operations officer, whatever that is, that Wigan Athletic were in the hunt for Portsmouth striker David Nugent before he opted for Turf Moor and the Premier League newcomers, phew!

Flood said: 'There was quite a bit of negotiating involved with Portsmouth and getting David in, because there was competition from Hull City and Wigan, but he chose to come to Burnley."

Now I don`t like to knock other clubs players and I know we were/are desperate to recruit a striker but David Nugent?

Nugent was excellent with Preston North End at Championship level though not prolific in the goal scoring charts, at Premiership level he has been an expensive flop.

Whilst at Preston the former Bury player scored 33 goals in 94 games, now like I have previously said not prolific but he was a good Championship player and brought others into the game and a goal in every three matches isn`t too bad.

A quick look at his Pompey career and we can see a bit of a struggle since he made the 6 million move south, in two seasons Nugent has only made 33 appearances and managed just 3 goals

At the Latics we already have one expensive Championship forward who cant make the step up in Marlon King, thank goodness we were spared another

Close Encounter of a Nugent Kind... LOL

Brownie has said that Hull weren't in for him at all, so I don't know about you boys, but I think this might just be Burnley bigging up a player they've signed, that no-one else wanted.

Well, you may well as think great we didn't get David Nugent... But try looking at the bigger picture. Wigan - a team well established in the Premier league. Burnley - a team just promoted with a football stadium not to dis-similar to Springfield park David Nugent opts to join Burnley instead, meaning Wigan can't even attract Championship quality players. I have supported Wigan since I was a little lad, and I must say I enjoyed Division 3, division 2, and so on far more than what I'm enjoying Wigan Athletic at the moment. I just hope Dave Whelan is happy with all the money he has made out of the football club, because let's be honest, all he is interested in is money. He can claim his love for the game, but when he constantly sells players in the manor he does.. He may as well of put Valencia on E-bay. I watched my last Latics match when they sold Cattermole.. This article about Nugent just backs up what I'm saying.

Dave - A ground not dis-similar to Springfield Park - Really?????

to be honest, when the club bottom of the premiership, with only one goal 9scorred by a defender) to his name, is looking to offload one of there strikers, you know something is wrong. The chances are, wigan MAY have considered it, however if your manager has ANY sense, he wouldn't have followed up an initial enquiry.

@ Claretdale. Yes.
