Wigan Athletic`s best ever goalkeeper? That would be Australian shot stopper John Filan, according to the last poll on Vital Latics.
Filan was signed for the Latics in December 2001 by Paul Jewell from Blackburn Rovers for a fee of £600,000 and what a bargain he proved to be.
In his first three seasons with the club he missed just one game and was part of the record breaking side that stormed the League Two (now League One) title in 2002/03, during that season Filan kept 8 consecutive clean sheets in league matches and conceded just 2 goals in 14 games in all competitions between the 1-1 draw with QPR in October and the 3-1 win against Notts County in January.
Filan also featured as a substitute for Mike Pollitt in the Carling Cup final if 2006 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
A fantastic keeper and character and he was an essential part of Latics rise through the league`s to reach the dizzy heights of Premiership football in 2005, Paul Jewell rated Filan as his best ever signing and I wouldn`t disagree.
