Wigan Athletic summer signing James McCarthy isn`t complaining despite having seen only limited first team action since his £3 million move from Hamilton Academicals.
Ahead of going on international duty with the Republic of Ireland under-21 side the 18 year old Scot told the Latics official website that he is continually working on keeping his fitness sharp and realises that he needs to bide his time.
McCarthy also commented on how the standard in England is much higher than Scotland and with so many talented players around him in the Latics squad he is on learning curve but he is being well looked after by Graeme Jones, Roberto Martinez and the rest of the staff.
The talented midfielder says that it`s been pretty much what he expected and that when his chance comes he will be ready to grab it with both hands, McCarthy said: 'Match fitness is what I need and that's what I'm getting in reserve-team football"
'It's a very good standard, and I'm happy to be playing 90 minutes trying to get my fitness levels up.
'I am still young, so I need to bide my time and hopefully when I get my chance I'll be able to take it.
'You are always learning in football. Coming down here has been a big learning curve for me but I'm enjoying it
'I've got the gaffer and Graeme Jones looking after me as well as the other boys, which has been a massive help for me.
'It's been pretty much as I expected it to be really. There are a lot of big-name players here which I was aware of and it's just a case of fighting my way into the squad and then the team.
'I'm happy with how it's gone so far, it's a learning curve and I just need to keep plugging away.'![]()
