Wigan Athletic players Hendry Thomas and Maynor Figueroa were amongst the Honduras team that suffered disappointment yesterday with a 2-3 loss at the hands of the USA in their penultimate game in the World Cup 2010 qualifiers.
A win would have take the catrachos to the top of the group and with them having won all previous home games in this round of qualification the odds were good.
With the score 0-0 at half-time and Honduras pressing the omens were good especially when Julio De Leon put the home side 1-0 up almost from the restart, unfortunately though the lead lasted just 8 minutes and the US equalised through Conor Casey on 54 minutes.
Casey scored again on 65 and Landon Donavon made it 1-3 on 71 minutes, Hendry Thomas was sacrificed following the goal for the more attack minded Ramon Nunez by Honduras coach Reinaldo Rueda and it paid dividends almost immediately with De Leon grabbing his second goal of the game on 77 minutes.
Unfortunately for the catrachos time ran out and through the win USA qualify for the finals automatically, with Mexico needing just a point from their final game of the campaign on Wednesday against Trinidad and Tobago it is left to Costa Rica and Honduras to vie for the last automatic and the play-off places with 2 points separating both countries.
Honduras travel to their fierce rivals El Salvador knowing that nothing less than a win will do whilst Costa Rica face the USA in Washington DC with a win guaranteeing their progress to the finals.
Teams:
Honduras: N. Valladares, Chavez, Figueroa, Thomas, Palacios, Pavon, De Leon, Izaguirre, Costly, Sabillon, Alvarez.
Subs: Canales, M. Valladares, Norales, Nunez, Suazo, Garcia, Martinez
USA: Howard, Spector, Bocanegra, Bradley, Onyewu, Holden, Casey, Davies, Donovan, Bornstein, Clark.
Subs: Guzan, Cherundolo, Torres, Cooper, Conrad, Feilhabor, Altidore
Current Standings
1 USA - 19
2 Mexico - 18
3 Costa Rica - 15
4 Honduras - 13
5 El Salvador - 8
6 Trinidad and Tobago - 5
So its all set for Wednesday, a win should do it for Honduras because it is unlikely that Costa Rica will beat the US in Washington.
