Wigan Athletic players had more downs than ups this weekend in their quest for World Cup 2010 qualification. Lets hope that disappointment doesn`t effect them too much when they return to the Latics.
Maynor Figueroa and Hendry Thomas both played in Honduras` home defeat to the USA and now they must win on Wednesday to stand any chance of automatic qualification though they are guaranteed at least a play-off spot.
Paul Scharner captained the Austria team to their 2-1 win over Lithuania but with France beating the Faroe Islands it means that the French have already secured the play-off birth in group 7 and when Scharner takes his side to Paris on Wednesday all that is left to play for is pride.
Jason Scotland didn`t feature for Trinidad and Tobago as they crashed 4-0 in Costa Rica and are rooted firmly at the bottom of their group.
Hugo Rodallega was a second half substitute for Colombia as they were soundly beaten 4-2 by Chile and now they face the daunting task of having to go to group leaders Paraguay on Wednesday and win whilst hoping that other results go their way in order to have any chance of making the play-offs, looks nigh on impossible.
Erik Edmans Sweden lost 1-0 against Denmark, the left back didn`t play or even make the bench, Sweden now face Albania on Wednesday with a play-off place the best on offer.
Latics 3rd choice keeper Richard Kingson is definitely going to the World Cup, he kept another clean sheet as Ghana beat Sudan 2-0 to maintain their 100% record, they have achieved qualification with two games remaining and are some pundits surprise package to actually put a serious challenge in to win the tournament next summer.
With England already there it will be nice for us to have alternatives to cheer on, we have Ghana and fingers crossed that Honduras will also make it, also we have a few ex-players in with a chance of some World Cup glory, Republic of Ireland star Kevin Kilbane is play-off bound, I wont mention Egypt…whoops I have
I am sure there will be a couple of shocks on Wednesday but I will be getting behind Honduras and hoping that they can find the win in El Salvador with the US doing them a favour by beating Costa Rica
