Whelan Opens the Door to Heskey Return

Whelan Opens the Door to Heskey Return

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has suggested that the Latics just might be interested in bringing former striker Emile Heskey back to the club a year on from his £3.5 million move 100 miles down the M6 to Aston Villa.

With just 15 goals in 82 games for the Latics during his two and a half seasons at the club he wasn`t exactly setting the goal scoring charts alight but he brought a lot more to both the team and the club during his stay in Lancashire.

Professional both on and off the pitch and always giving 100% for the team, his performance against Sheffield United in the final game of the 2006/07 season epitomised what he was all about.

Whilst at the Latics Heskey won an England recall, former boss Steve McClaren sending for the big man in the country`s hour of need as they were struggling to reach the 2008 European Championships and such was his impact in his first two games that soccer pundit Alan Shearer commented: 'Never in a million years did I expect to be discussing whether Emile Heskey should keep his place ahead of Wayne Rooney but the Wigan striker was outstanding over both games.'

Now due to being sat on Villa`s bench for most of this season Heskey finds his England place under threat as the World Cup edges ever closer and it is believed that national boss Fabio Capello has told him that he must get regular first team action if he is to keep his place in the squad for next summer`s tournament.

Heskey says publicly that he may have to move to get the regular playing time needed, but the big question is to where?

Liverpool have been muted, but why swap Villa`s bench for the one at Anfield, to guarantee some action Heskey will have to lower his sights to clubs in and around the mid-table area, clubs like ourselves, Bolton Blackburn, Hull, Portsmouth, Fulham etc.

He made a massive impression on Latics chairman Dave Whelan during his previous stay with us and Whelan, as always, hasn`t held back when talking to the press about Heskey and says he would welcome him back but doubts Villa would sell, maybe not at the price you`d offer Dave.

Speaking to Sky Sports Whelan say`s: 'We could well be interested. I have a great deal of sympathy for him - he is one wonderful footballer.

'When he is on the park you know you are going to get 110%. I absolutely thought he was fantastic for us but he was coming to the end of his contract and he wanted to move on so I honoured that.'

'Everybody in football would like Emile somewhere in their squad. He is that kind of lad.

'But I'd be very surprised if Aston Villa sell him and I still think he has got a good future at Villa.'

Heskey to come back? What are your thougts, though I thought he was great for us that time that gone and I'd have to say no
14/10/2009 09:48:00
Make a new poll.
14/10/2009 10:00:00
For me its a definite no, in his last 6 months at the club he didn't look interested at all. I'm not sure he'd bring anything that Scotland doesn't bring, plus if Scotland can replicate his championship form in the PL (debatable) then we'd have best of both worlds.
14/10/2009 10:01:00
Such a difficult question....if a loan deal is possible, then I would definately take him back - permanently though I think he'll prove a bit too injury prone to be worth the money. Either way we do need a new striker in January, King simply isn't good enough and I'm yet to be convinced by Scotland. And what are you on about 'I'm not sure he'd bring anything that Scotland doesn't bring' capt_carl? They're two totally different players, when was the last time you saw Scotland win a header for a start?
14/10/2009 11:38:00
When was the last time you saw a header won by Emile actually prove fruitful?! He spent the majority of his time heading the ball on to no-one! Besides which he wouldn't soon our current style of play anyway, we are trying not to spend 90 minutes playing headers and volleys under Martinez.
14/10/2009 11:53:00
It was hardly Heskey's fault that none of his strike partners were ever within 40 yards of him is it? You can't underestimate the job Heskey did for us before he left, I really do think he could be useful as the striker in the 4-5-1. Get Rodallega playingn just in behind him and it's going to be a million times more productive than sticking Marlon King in there. Whether we re-sign Heskey or not, a new striker is a must because Scotland doesn't look like he's ever going to adapt to the Premiership.
14/10/2009 12:12:00
I'd have him back. Think about it, we used to play a hell of a lot better with him in the team than when he was out of it i.e. when he was injured...also when he left in Jan, we went *****!
14/10/2009 12:30:00
We'll pay his taxi fair and throw in a free packet of crisps. Deal or no deal?
The Fear
14/10/2009 15:17:00
Youll give back the only transfer fee wed pay for him? Deal!
14/10/2009 15:26:00
never go back don't they say?
