Honduras Qualify in Night of Drama

Wigan Athletic players Maynor Figueroa and Hendry Thomas will return to the Latics on top of the world as Honduras qualified for next summers World Cup finals in very dramatic circumstances.

Going in to the final game in the CONCACAF group Honduras sat in 4th place and needed to win away at El Salvador and hope that Costa Rica couldn`t snatch a win against the USA in Washington DC.

30 minutes into the games it all looked like it was going wrong, Honduras were drawing 0-0 against a stubborn and dangerous El Salvador whilst Costa Rica had stormed into a two goal lead against the US.

Carlos Pavon scored for Honduras on 62 minutes but it didn`t seem to matter because the USA were still losing, then with 15 minutes left Michael Bradley poached an opportunistic goal for the Americans and the game was on, with time running out tensions were high in Washington, the Honduras game had finished 1-0 could the USA finish the job and grab an equaliser, you bet, 5 minutes into stoppage time Jonathan Bornstein nodded only his third goal for the Americans from a Landon Donovan corner kick.

The final whistle was greeted with cries of exultation back in Honduras; the catrachos are going to the World Cup, congratulations to all our Honduran friends from Vital Wigan, see you in South Africa
