Wigan Athletic World Cup Report

Several Wigan Athletic players featured in last nights World Cup games for their countries and some had very memorable experiences and will still be buzzing this morning following last night dramatics.

First off Maynor Figueroa and Hendry Thomas were involved in the most dramatic event of the day, Honduras qualified courtesy of a USA equaliser 5 minutes into stoppage time, they say snatching a late draw can feel as good as a win, on this occasion that certainly rang true as the USA managing to draw with Costa Rica allowed the Hondurans to leap over Costa Rica in the CONCACAF table and snatch qualification from the jaws of a play-off game against Uruguay.

Hugo Rodallega scored a second half goal as Colombia beat Paraguay 2-0 away but they finish just one point outside the play-off spot and wonder what could have been, if only they had given Hugo more starts.

Paul Scharner captained Austria as they lost 3-1 to France in Paris but they were already group also rans before this game, and Erik Edman was in the Sweden squad but didn`t feature as they beat Albania 4-1, again too little too late for the Swedes.

Jason Scotland was part of the Trinidad and Tobago squad that snatched a credible 2-2 draw with Mexico but the Latics striker didn`t feature as the Islanders finished bottom of their group.

So the exciting news is the qualification of Honduras and there will be extra interest now in the finals for many Latics fans
