Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez says that all the talk of a return to the Latics for current Aston Villa and England striker Emile Heskey is down to the success he enjoyed at the club during his two and a half years both on and off the pitch.
Martinez although he never worked with Heskey has obviously been swayed by those at the club who have and Chairman Dave Whelan made comments this week about how wonderful Heskey was for the Latics
Undoubtedly the England striker put in some great performances for the Latics and no one will forget his stunning display against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on the final day of the 2006/07 season, but he was hardly a prolific goal scorer for the Latics and sentiment should not get in the way of making sound footballing decisions.
To bring Heskey back to the club on a permanent basis would be a mistake in my opinion, he spent a large chunk of his time at the Latics injured with various niggles and maybe his injury free run at Villa is down to the fact that he doesn`t play every week and so misses the intensity of Premier League football
A loan spell though wouldn`t be a bad option and could work well for all parties concerned, we are desperately short of any depth in our forward line and desperately just maybe an understatement, Heskey himself would benefit from at least a bit of play time as he looks to secure his place in the England world cup squad and Villa will get some of the wages paid for a player who appears to be gathering splinters in his backside.
Martinez is non committal on Heskey, which is fair enough and he is respecting Villa by not unsettling anyone, pity Steve Bruce isn`t as courteous, Martinez says on the matter: 'The talk about Emile is because we have great memories of him here - he was an ambassador for the club and an example to the players every day.
'Everyone thinks the world of him here, but he is an Aston Villa player and it would be disrespectful to talk about him.'
Do you think the Latics should bring Heskey back? There is a poll on the right side of this page asking that question, the participate simply select your option and then hit the submit button, its that simple, the poll will run until tomorrow (Sunday) morning.
