Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez says that he wants to pass his managerial test as he turns the Latics, into what many pundits are calling his team, the Arsenal of the North.
It is quite evident to anyone watching the transformation that is taking place at the DW Stadium that the Latics are becoming a team for the footballing connoisseur, gone is the 100 mile an hour route one football, with the harem scarem approach and the tactic of hitting the space in the corners and hoping for the best.
In it`s place Martinez has brought a brand of playing style that is quite literally there to pass any test, an article in the Times points out that in the recent game at the KC Stadium between Hull and the Latics, the home side made 128 passes during the match, Latics made a staggering 547, add to that the fact that under previous boss Steve Bruce we averaged around 220 passes per game the first thing noticeable is that our possession percentage must have risen dramatically under the new regime.
Now if you have the ball the opposition cant score and with the right amount of probing you will inevitably create chances for yourself, who said that, Martinez? Well maybe he did but my school football team coach back in the 1970`s gave me that little piece of advice and it certainly rings true.
The football revolution taking place at Wigan Athletic is making people sit up and take notice and the man educating the players in the finer ways of the beautiful game is determined to carry on with his master plan, Martinez says: "The team did well under Steve, but I want us to pass the ball more, to get away from the territorial game"
"At Swansea, we averaged over 550 passes per game. I want Wigan to do the same."
