Latics News - Its Hip, Hip Ooh Sore For Scharner

Wigan Athletic star Paul Scharner says he will be fit to face Burnley at the weekend despite leaving Sundays game against Manchester City on 70 minutes with a hip injury.

The Austria international felt the problem flair up in training on Saturday morning but was declared fit to take his place in the Latics midfield on Sunday as the inflammation in his hip seemed to settle down.

Unfortunately Scharner is no spring chicken any more and at 29 it takes a little longer for niggles to settle down completely and during the game it tightened up again and forced him to be replaced by Jordi Gomez, Scharner explains: 'I picked up the injury the day before the game, but it felt comfortable during the warm-up.

'But during the game it tightened up again, and in the end I couldn't
continue.

'We'll assess the injury, but hopefully I'll be okay for Saturday. I think I will be fine.'

Latics boss Roberto Martinez believes the injury is due to Scharner playing three games in seven days and feels that with treatment he will be ready for Saturdays game at Turfmoor, Martinez says: 'We'll assess him over the next 24 hours, and we're hoping it is only swelling.

'Obviously he's played three games in the space of week, and sometimes this is the kind of effect you get from travelling and playing international football.

'Hopefully, there'll be some positive news for us.'
