'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Paul Scharner Set To Decide His Future

Wigan Athletics longest serving outfield player Paul Scharner is undecided what to do when his current contract at the Latics runs out next summer.

The Austria international captain will have no shortage of offers following a great start to the season that`s seen the central defender switched to a less restrictive midfield role that he has been crying out to play for a while now and he is seeing much more of the ball.

It is well documented that last season Scharner wasn`t happy and he talked of leaving with clubs in Germany reportedly interested along with Aston Villa and Sundays opponents Fulham, he said he wanted to play European football and have an extra challenge.

His move away didn`t happen and at the moment he appears very settled, maybe Latics boss Roberto Martinez should sit down with Scharner and get him to sign an extension before rival clubs come sniffing around making him offers, he is free to talk to anyone from 1st January.

Scharner himself has indicated that he would stay; he likes the manager, the football and we know he loves Wigan, Scharner says: 'I am very happy at Wigan now. We have a very good manager, who has changed the whole philosophy of the club.

'We play a lot more football now than we have in the last three and a half years, when we were more direct.

'It takes time and hard work to change the style of a club, but I am much happier playing this way

'I am a free agent in the summer, and we will be looking at what's going on in the next few months.

'I will decide at the right time, but the most important thing now is to get good performances and good results.'
