The official re-naming has been done, the signs have gone up and from Sunday you wont be taking your seats in the West Stand, oh no not any more, as from Sunday supporters sitting in the side of the ground that accommodates the players tunnel will be sitting in the Springfield Stand.
Following a collective campaign from Latics internet fans sites Dave Whelan agreed to the re-name in honour of the clubs previous home, Springfield Park, a name that holds a lot of happy memories for fans and former players and a name that conjures up great emotion amongst older Latics.
Current Latics boss Roberto Martinez made his name as a player at Springfield Park when he came to the club in 1995 as a young lad trying his luck in a foreign land and he speaks with genuine emotion when he looks back on his time there.
Roberto says: 'Everyone knows about my association with Wigan Athletic, and Springfield Park was really where it all began for me in England.
'I have some incredible memories of the place; I suppose the highlights for me were the night we won promotion in 1997 against Colchester, and then the Championship against Mansfield. But really, it was the place I grew up as a footballer. Great, great days.'
One man at the club today both played for and managed the Latics at Springfield Park, Graham Barrow and he has nothing but fantastic memories of the place, Barrow says: 'I said when I rejoined Wigan how much this club means to me, and Springfield Park is a fundamental part of that feeling. It's where I learned my trade as a footballer, so I think it's fitting that the old place can still be a part of the new stadium.'
