Wigan Athletic face Fulham on Sunday at the DW Stadium so Vital Latics thought it might be an idea to take a quick look at some of the players that have represented both clubs down the years, with the clubs being 212 miles apart there isn`t a big list but there are some crackers on there:
Dave Beasant, Jimmy Bullard, Michael Brown, Bobby Campbell, Duncan Colquhoun, Mark Grew, Geoff Horsfield and Dai Jones
Jimmy Bullard played 145 times for the Latics following his move from Peterborough in 2003 and scored 10 goals helping the clubs meteoric rise through the divisions, he moved onto Fulham in June 2006 for a bargain £2.5 million, due to a clause in his contract allowing him to move for that amount.
Jimmy`s Fulham career was blighted by a serious knee injury that limited him to just 39 appearances for the West London club scoring 6 goals but whilst at Craven Cottage Jimmy forced his way into the England squad for the World Cup qualifying game in Croatia. Fulham sold Jimmy to Hull for £5 million in January this year.
Michael Brown moved to the JJB in August 2007 with Latics paying Fulham a reputed £2.5 million for their skipper. Brown had joined Fulham in January 2006 from Spurs for a similar fee and his 18 months spent at Craven Cottage were a relatively successful one making 44 appearances for the Londoners.
The hard tackling midfield man enjoyed a good run in the Latics side and he made the central midfield spot his own, Brownie made 58 appearances for the Latics before being sold to Portsmouth in August this year for £1 million.
Geoff Horsfield played for both the Latics and Fulham and his no nonsense centre forward play made him a favourite at both clubs, even though he wasn`t at either for too long, Horsfield made 59 appearances for Fulham between 1998 - 2000 scoring 22 times and in 2003 he played 16 times and scored 7 goals in just three months with the Latics before moving on to West Brom.
In October 2008 Geoff was diagnosed has having testicular cancer and at 35 he was told that his football career was over, but the big man had other ideas, he beat the illness and signed on at Lincoln City where he also did a bit of coaching, he managed 17 games last season for the Imps scoring once, he said on his battle with cancer:
Getting cancer was something I had to get over. I got it, wanted to beat it and I did. Now I am just glad that I've got another chance in football.'
He was released by Lincoln at the end of last season and signed a deal with League 2 side Port Vale where he also acts as assistant manager to Mickey Adams, but in typical Horsfield fashion he developed Swine Flu before he could make his debut, the hard working Yorkshire man does nothing the easy way it seems, he has made 7 appearances so far this season for the Valliant`s, six of them as a sub.
