Roberto Martinez Pleased With Erik Edman Return

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez was delighted to see long term absentee Erik Edman return to the starting line up yesterday in his first Premier League start since damaging knee ligaments away at Blackburn Rovers on 22nd March 2008.

Although Edman has featured on the bench and made starts in the cup`s Maynor Figueroa`s superb form at left back in his absence has kept the likeable Swede from making a complete recovery from the horrendous injury he suffered, but now the tables have turned slightly and Figueroa will spend the next few weeks on the treatment table allowing Erik the chance to claim back his place on a more permanent basis.

The classy 31 year old did a good job yesterday, though he did look a little rusty in the opening stages Edman oozes class and once he`d settled it was like he`d never been away, unfortunately not match fit he tired late on and was replaced by Scott Sinclair on 78 minutes with Charles N`Zogbia filling in at the back.

Roberto was obviously thrilled to have Edman as an option and speaking to the press he said: 'He has been working very hard behind the scenes, and his play showed that he was ready to return.

'Mentally he is very strong, and we just had to protect him a little bit. But I was very pleased to see him back on the pitch and enjoying his football.'

Good to have him back, prefer Figgy but Edman is more than an adequate stand-in
