The 2000 memories series continues, celebrating the Latics hitting 2000 points as a league club in the recent game against Fulham, Vital member Don Boardman, better known as Zakky to regulars on the site, tells us which game has been the most memorable to him, over to you Don:
Latics 3-0 Rochdale
I think my greatest memory of all the 2000 points we have achieved is probably the second and third points we gained. It was Wednesday the 13th of September 1978. And our sixth game of a memorable first season in the Football League at home against Rochdale.
Now many may say there`s nothing memorable about Rochdale but when you have watched Latics in the Lancashire Combination, Cheshire League & Northern Premier League and played against teams like Northern Nomads, playing Rochdale was akin to being in the Champions league.
After a highly creditable draw at Hereford on the opening day giving us the very first point of our 2000, we had suffered 4 consecutive defeats and the 5,746 fans in attendance on a balmy late summer`s evening were a little nervy to say the least, but when Jeff Wright crashed the ball into the net Latics begun to turn on the style and further goals from Frank Corrigan and Joe Hinnigan sealed victory as Latics gained their first ever win in the Football League.
Now 31 years on my memory does not allow me to reveal a full match report but needless to say this was one of the greatest days in the history of Wigan Athletic and one of the proudest of my life.
"OUR FIRST VICTORY"
Latics team:
1 John Brown, 2 Kevin Smart, 3 Joe Hinnigan, 4 Tommy Gore, 5 Noel Ward, 6 Ian Gillibrand, 7 Frank Corrigan, 8 Jeff Wright, 9 Mickey Moore, 10 Alan Crompton, 11 Ian Purdie
Sub Derek Brownbill
The programme from that fantastic night
Thanks Don, although we had a point from the Hereford game I always remember this as the one that really got us started
