The 2000 memories series continues, celebrating the Latics hitting 2000 points as a league club in the recent game against Fulham, Vital member Daniel Griffin, better known as centrelink1 to regulars on the site, tells us which game has been the most memorable to him, over to you Daniel:
Latics 1-0 Spurs
The game was dull, but the moment, the key moment, was just about perfect.
The memory takes us back to mid last season, a now strange but then magical time when Wilson Palacios was at his brilliant best, Cattermole was working by his side, Heskey played the wrecking ball up front , Zaki was actually contributing in some form and Jermaine Defoe was making his "debut" for Spurs. Ah, those were simpler times, when there was no debate over the manager or the style of play, and a premature European ambition surrounding the club.
Up until that point, very rarely had Wigan dominated a game to produce a 0-0 score line. But this game seemed to be turning that way. Zaki had had about 3 wide headers, Gomes had done well to save from Heskey, and Palacios had made a great pass for Zaki, and tried an audacious overhead kick himself. I guess, looking back at it now, it was his performance, as well as the feeling of escaping the 0-0 draw, something we would not be able to do later on in the season, that made this game a special one for me.
Yes, Palacios was the best of the 5 who no longer play for us.
Heskey was doing his job, as per normal. Zaki, while not scoring, had a significant contribution that day, Cattermole I remember very little of from the game. And Ryan Taylor got a ball thrown straight to him by Gomes, and tried to control it and shoot. Gomes was able to recover, but it was a decent attempt from an ambitious player.
Anyway, back to the game, instead of the nostalgic memories that go with it. By the end of the game, I was, as any fan would be, very frustrated. Taylor had delivered a poor corner only a few minutes ago, and with typical impatience of a teenager, I expected nothing better from this one. However, Maynor Figueroa headed home on 90 minutes to give Wigan the game. A match of frustration ended in a moment of pure joy.
Looking back, it wasn`t by any measure a spectacular game, but thinking of Palacios, an in form Zaki, and the horrible amount of 0-0 games to follow. To see Palacios in a Wigan shirt just one more time... I will never forget the game, dull as it was for almost 90 minutes.
Good memories Daniel, very poignant with the game coming up this weekend
