Wigan Athletic - Lee Cattermole Gets It Wrong

Sunderland star and former Wigan Athletic midfield man Lee Cattermole has responded to Latics chairman Dave Whelans claims that former boss Steve Bruce made some poor signings whilst at the club by saying that Whelan is trying to deflect attention from Roberto Martinez following the 9-1 defeat at Spurs.

Well maybe he is to a certain degree and who can blame him but Whelan is right in what he is saying and Cattermole is talking rubbish even getting facts wrong, maybe he is trying to take some of the heat off his own boss before he returns to the DW Stadium on Saturday for the first time since he left back in May.

Lets look at what Cattermole says: 'I like Dave Whelan. I think he's a good chairman - a footballing chairman.

'But I don't understand where he is coming from with this.

'When you look at the guys Steve bought for Wigan, you just can't argue with his record - Wilson Palacios, Antonio Valencia - they were sold for big, big money.

'Not everyone's going to be a big hit but I can't understand Dave Whelan attacking the gaffer.

'I think he is just trying to take the heat off the new manager.

'You look at the signings the gaffer made at Wigan and, to be honest, I thought they were all good.'

Well first off Antonio Valencia wasn`t a Bruce signing, he`d been at the Latics 18 months before Steve Bruce arrived, Paul Jewell was the instigator of that signing, Wilson Palacios he can have and a wonderful signing that was, but, Olivier Kapo, Daniel DeRidder, Richard Kingson, Marlon King, Erik Edman and Ben Watson have hardly set the place on fire with Kapo, King and Watson costing a combined £10 million add to that fat contracts and Whelan does have a point.

Its not easy to buy great players with the money you guys have. He took you to 11th place last year, having been forced to sell Palacios and knowing Valencia was to be sold too. Unfortuantly you end up selling all your best players. Palacios, Heskey, Cattermole, Valencia, Chimbonda, Roberts, Bullard etc

wasn't valencia on loan still before bruce come to wigan thou? thats will be why he is taking the credit for the signing. i thought edman was doing well at wigan before the injury he sustained at blackburn so after over a year out what do you expect from him?and no one has mentioned figeroa wasn't he a bruce signing? hes turned out to be a really good signing! and suprise suprise already he is being linked with a big money move away. this is typical of our club soon as we get some really desent players we sell them, i totally agree with the other bruce signings though but lets face facts bobbys signings have not been great either

Figgy was signed by Brucie but spotted by Benson when he went scouting...I dont really want to knock Catts but to say all Bruce's signings have been great is a little stretch of the imagination

Cats may be an awesome player, but he should stick to what he knows best. I'm sure Steve bruce is a big boy and can defend hinself, or can he!! I'll give him the Wilson signing, but it was Venger that put him on to him so he wasn't really a true out and out Brucy find, otherwise it's really only Cats thats been any good.
