What The Bosses Said - Latics Vs Sunderland

What The Bosses Said - Latics Vs Sunderland

Wigan Athletic 1-0 Sunderland

Following the game yesterday both managers, a relieved Roberto Martinez and an angry Steve Bruce spoke to the press, lets see what they had to say:

Latics boss Roberto Martinez :

'It has been a very painful and hurtful week and the humiliation comes if you don't react. But the players showed terrific character and bounced back.

'No-one more so than Chris Kirkland, who was brilliant today. Chris showed that if England need a goalkeeper it's clear he has got everything.

'We looked very mature, controlled the game and created many opportunities. To keep Sunderland to one opportunity on target shows great character. Everyone at Wigan Athletic should be proud.

'We are a team who are very hard to beat at home and we showed that today.'

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce

'It's frustrating and disappointing, for sure. That's a shadow of what we've produced for four or five weeks. The performance level was not there and that's sad for me.

'In the first half it looked like we just went through the motions. The first goal was always going to be vital but we didn't get anywhere near it, especially in the first half.

'The goal was sloppy and sums up our whole afternoon.

'We know you can't play well every week but on days like these we've got to be resilient and do enough to take a point. I'll have a miserable weekend this weekend.'

Great result and possibly the most important of the season so far

I am really pleased that you guys managed to win. I felt sorry for you after the 9-1 game. i felt that a performance like that was coming from us and you just managed to catch us on a really bad day. the fact that you tried to play open football rather than damage limitation didn't help. i really like Wigan this season and martinez as you have started to play the game the way it is to be played. I always like teams who try to pay proper football or the 'Spurs way". I really hate teams ike Bolton and stoke who play anti football, i hope you guys finish in the top half and have a good season.

Cheers for that, its a really tight league at the moment and we are just 3 points behind Sunderland who are in 8th, plus we have played 7 of the top 8 so with some winnable games ahead we coud/should start to get back up into the top half, fingers crossed, hopefully
