Vital member Phil Blinston (zakidaman) looks ahead to tomorrow`s game with Birmingham and gives us his verdict on how the game will unfold, over to you Phil:
Roberto Martinez is the 'Maestro' and it won`t be us playing the Blues
Phil Blinston (Latics Fan)
Latics will be hosting Birmingham City FC, nicknamed the 'Blues` in the next home fixture at the DW stadium, the players, having proved a point or 3 to the pundits in last week`s encounter with everything Sunderland could throw at us. In this week`s game we won`t be playing the 'BLUES` as we shrugged off a Sunderland side with a reputation for good home form and poor away form.
Personally I do feel the game with McLeish`s men will be totally different as the Blues are the in-form team. Birmingham on paper, don`t have more to offer than Sunderland, and they have never won at Wigan, but as we`ve seen all season, Latics home and away have surprised and shocked everyone. Our players never regained their confidence, because in all honestly they never lost it, but we can be naive and sometimes have lacked passion.
There have been no easy games in the Premiership so far, and I see this as being another hard fought and somewhat scrappy game, but Wigan will have the upper hand. Birmingham like Wigan play a similar 4-5-1 formation, and occasionally change to a more attacking 4-4-2 formation, though they don't score enough goals, and McLeish knows they won't stay up if they only score odd goals all season, so I think he`ll be looking to keep it positive for his side and try to get something from the game.
The Stats briefly are:
Latics - Birmingham
Played 14 - 14
Points 17 - 18
Won 5 - 5
Drawn 2 - 3
Lost 7 - 6
Goals for 15 - 12
Goals against 31 - 14
The Blues are 5 games unbeaten and Alex McLeish will be hoping to make it 6 games against a formidable but inconsistent Wigan side. Though Birmingham are brimming with confidence, and their current run of 11 points from five games lifted them to 11th spot on the Premier League I don`t see anything in Birmingham`s arsenal for us to be scared of. But we shouldn`t be complacent about them, a factor that may have also let us down at times this season.
Alex McLeish, Lee Bowyer, Barry Ferguson, McFadden and the new owner, Carson Yeung will have other ideas, and will no doubt be looking to make it 6 wins in a row.
Roberto Martinez is the Maestro and it won`t be us playing the blues.
So My Verdict:
2-0 Wigan win.
Wigan Athletic probable:
Kirkland; Melchiot, Boyce, Bramble, Figueroa; N'Zogbia, Thomas, Scharner, Diame, Rodallega; Scotland.
