'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Martinez - That was Painful and Unacceptable

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez says Saturdays loss to Birmingham City was painful and that there was no leadership on the pitch and no character shown by his team until it was too late.

The Latics boss was obviously angered by his team`s second half failings after comfortably leading the game 1-0 at half time by 70 minutes they were 3-1 down and Birmingham were looking likely to score more.

Martinez also says that it is unacceptable for the players to have so many qualities missing from their game and it will be corrected. Speaking to the press Martinez said: 'It is painful to create chance after chance in the first half and then get punished in the second half'

'We had control of the game, we were in the driving seat, and to throw everything away is not the right reaction or the right performance.

'In the first half, we lacked that final touch and composure after getting ourselves in some good positions.

'But, after that, we didn't show any direction or character which is very upsetting. And I think we really let Birmingham off the hook.

'As a team we have to show leadership, and individually the players have to take responsibility for their performance.

'Those qualities were missing and it's unacceptable - but we'll learn and correct it.

'We let ourselves down, and by the time we reacted, it was too late.'
