Wigan Athletic - Pollitt Gets Ready For Action

Wigan Athletic second choice keeper Mike Pollitt has been speaking about being thrown into the action on Saturday following Chris Kirkland pulling up after 20 minutes in the game against Birmingham

Kirkland has a well documented problem with his back and uses a special training regime as well as specific warm-up routines prior to games but unfortunately on Saturday his back went into spasm as he went to pick up the ball in his penalty area and that was that.

The Latics number one has been in excellent form this season and a recall to the England squad has been mentioned in certain quarters so this latest set back will be a major disappointment for the former Coventry and Liverpool shot-stopper.

Pollitt knows only too well Kirklands problems and he says that he always makes sure he is ready for action by doing extensive warm ups prior to games, `just in case`, and one such case was Saturday.

The Bolton born keeper replaced Kirkland with Birmingham having been awarded a free kick over on the Latics left and within seconds of coming off the bench big Mike was making a top-class point blank save at the far post.

Pollitt says he is extremely disappointed that he conceded three goals after feeling that he was on course to achieve a clean sheet, Pollitt says: 'Chris' injuries are well documented so you always prepare yourself for the worst and make sure you do a proper warm-up just in case you get the nod. I'm an experienced player, I work-hard in training and that proved important today.

'It's always difficult for a 'keeper to come on as a sub, and to it after 20 minutes means you've been sitting down for that period of time and have to get yourself warmed up and ready quickly.

'I managed to make a decent save early doors and I was enjoying myself thinking it was a great chance to get a clean sheet behind me. But all of a sudden you find yourself 3-1 down so a disappointing day.'

Chris Kirkland is set to have a scan on his back toady (Monday) and a decision on the course of treatment will be made once the injury has been fully assessed meanwhile Mike Pollitt will continue to train hard and be prepared for action at Stoke next Saturday

Looks likely it'll be Pollitt between the sticks on Saturday

Oh no, nice bloke but his reactions and himself are too slow for the premiership. For me he was to blame for two on saturday. "The Latics number one has been in excellent form this season" not what I hear and see in the East Stand, he is having a Mare this season. Fingers crossed for good, well needed new faces in January - new injury free keeper who opens his mouth. 2 new faces in defence, a left winger and 2 strikers please Father Whelan.
