Wigan Athletic - Whelan Wants Top Ten Finish

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan, speaking to the clubs official web site, says that he hopes the Latics can challenge for a top ten finish to this season.

Whelan was reflecting about the season so far when he recalled the fantastic results against Chelsea and Sunderland contrasting with the diabolical events at White Hart Lane back in late November, but Whelan was also philosophical when he acknowledged that results like the Spurs one can happen from time to time.

The Latics owner says that he hopes that the team can be lucky with injuries and the star players can stay fit over the busy festive period and if they can manage that and pick up some points he forecasts a top ten challenge for the new year.

Speaking to the official site Whelan said: 'When we beat Chelsea earlier on this season it was fantastic, and I think the whole of the Premier League, apart from Chelsea, enjoyed it. The win against Sunderland was also important, especially after the nightmare at Tottenham.

'These things happen now and again, I remember being beaten 6-1 whilst I was playing for Crewe all those years ago. I remember last season, we got an amazing result away to Hull City when we won 5-0, so it does happen.

'We've not got the strongest playing squad in the world, by any means. What we don't want is injuries; it would be very hard to replace some of our quality players if they were to pick up a knock. But hopefully we can pick up a few points before Christmas and sail into the new-year looking for a top-ten finish.'

Top ten Dave....maybe you'll give Bobby some cash then to strengthen the squad in January?
