Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez has urged left back and wonder goal man Maynor Figueroa to consider what`s best for his future and stay put at the Latics for the time being at least.
It is well documented that former Latics boss Steve Bruce would love to take the Honduras international to Sunderland and he had a £3 million bid rejected on transfer deadline day back in summer, he is expected to return with £5 million once the window re-opens in two weeks time.
With Figueroa`s fantastic strike against Stoke on Saturday his reputation is growing and managers from the top clubs will be sitting up and taking notice of any developments with regards the availability of one of the best left backs in the Premier League.
Martinez is philosophical in realising that when the big boys come calling the club cant stand in the way of the players progressing their careers but the Latics boss reckons January wouldn`t be the right time for Figueroa to move on.
With the World Cup just six months away Martinez questions the damage the upheaval of moving from the Latics would have on Figueroa`s focus and urges him to stay put, till the summer at least, also a good tournament for the left back may see his valuation rocket.
Speaking to the press at the weekend Martinez says on the possible departure of Figueroa: "Obviously we don`t want to lose our best performers. Maynor has been outstanding all season"
"But we know we`re not going to be able to keep him for ever. He`s gradually fulfilling his potential and he`s got the World Cup in front of him next summer. I don`t think a change of club would be such a good idea before such a big event."
"Might he go in the summer? Probably but until then we'll keep enjoying the quality of his defending and the quality of his free-kicks"
Stay put Maynor, you`re amongst friends ![]()
