Wigan Athletic - Waldo Ponce Flies In For Talks

Reports in South America are linking Wigan Athletic with a move for Chile international defender Waldo Ponce who is set to be a free agent when his contract with Argentina club Velez Sarsfield expires.

It is understood that Ponce, pronounced Pawn-Say, is due to fly into the UK later in the week to start contract negotiations with the Latics who want the Chile World Cup star on short term deal to see if he is up to the rigours of the Premier League, whilst the player himself wants a 12 month deal.

The 27 year old defender has had one unsuccessful period in European football when he had a 6 month loan spell with German club Wolfsburg but only made 5 appearances and was very unconvincing.

The Chile international who has represented his country 23 times and scored 2 goals spoke to the press about his proposed move to the Latics, he said: 'I have a score to settle with playing in Europe,' with reference to his Wolfsburg stint.

"I've just turned 27 and maybe it's time to settle this debt.'
