Wigan Athletic - Diame in Injury Scare

Wigan Athletic midfield star Momo Diame came in for some rough treatment in last nights encounter with Liverpool at Anfield and was the subject of some particularly heavy challenges especially one from behind by Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.

The Gerrard challenge, which occurred in the first half of the game, required Diame to have lengthy treatment on his knee but he was deemed ok to continue by the medical staff, unfortunately he only lasted 12 minutes into the second half before Latics boss Roberto Martinez was forced to replace him as the injury became worse.

Diame is vital to the Latics style of play; he carries the ball excellently, breaks up opposition attacks and can pick out a pass, if he is forced to sit out any games he will be missed without doubt.

Speaking about the injury Latics boss Roberto Martinez says the injury will be assessed and hopefully they took him off at the right time, Martinez said: 'Momo opened his medial ligament a little bit in a challenge in the first half, which was getting worse as the game progressed.

'We took him off to assess the damage, and at the moment we don't know how badly he is injured and how long he'll be out.

'With a bit of luck, he won't be out for too long.

'The concern is that the next game is this Monday, which is very close, but hopefully we took him off at the right time and he avoided any real damage.'
