For Wigan Athletic fans 2009 hasn`t been the best of years, it started badly on January 2nd with a 3-1 defeat at White Hart Lane in the 3rd round of the FA Cup against Spurs and ended even worse with a 5-0 tonking at Old Trafford against Manchester United on 30th December.
In between the Latics have played 41 games of which they have won 9, lost 22 and drawn 10; not very good reading is it. Add to that the fact that we have lost class players in Emile Heskey, Wilson Palacios, Antonio Valencia and Lee Cattermole, plus had a change in management and coaching staff causing a major upheaval at the club then I for one will be happy to see the back of this year.
Other lows have been an inability to score at the back end of last season with just 10 league goals coming in the final 19 games from January to May and of course our humblings against Spurs, Man Utd (twice) and Portsmouth this season.
It hasn`t been all bad though, Roberto Martinez has returned to the club as manager in place of Steve Bruce who left for Sunderland, Martinez isn`t having an easy ride but his vision for the club is breath taking and with the right support from the chairman and the fans and a little bit of luck 'Bobby` will lead the Latics onto the next level.
We have already seen glimpses with fine displays against Aston Villa, Chelsea and Burnley which produced great wins acquired in great style, the home win against Sunderland at the end of November was also a tremendous victory full of character and much needed at the time.
As we enter the New Year 2010 will hopefully herald a new start for our season, Martinez has been scouring the markets and we have the promise of new additions to the squad which will hopefully carry us through to a comfortable league finish and give a good basis for building during the summer for the new season.
Lets look to the start of not just a new year but also a new decade with some optimism and trust in the manager to make his vision a reality.![]()
