There is a lot more than just the M6 Motorway connecting Wigan Athletic to Aston Villa, Vital Latics takes a quick look back down the years to see the connections between these two famous clubs.
Employed by both the Latics and Villa:
Warren Aspinall, Lee Butler, Bobby Campbell, John Deehan, Gareth Farrelly, Emile Heskey, Alan McLoughlin, Brendan Ormsby, Nigel Spink, Kenny Swain and David Unsworth
Former Managers and Coaches
Two ex Villa players have managed the Latics with very different outcomes and one was a very successful coach:
Ex-Villa fullback Kenny Swain managed the Latics disastrously in 1993 and almost got us relegated from the football league.
Swain, who had won the European Cup with Villa in 1982 was assistant manager to Dario Gradi at Crewe when the Latics approached him to become the head honcho at Springfield Park following relegation to the bottom tier of English football back in 1993, he jumped at the chance and with his brand of Sunday League football produced the worst team in Wigan Athletic history.
Kenny Swain was replaced as Latics boss by Graham Barrow who himself was replaced by another ex-Villa player John Deehan 1995.
Deehan was the first part of the Dave Whelans 10 year plan for the Latics when he was recruited as manager at Springfield Park in October 1995, he went on to lead the Latics to the third division title in 1997 before leaving in 1998, Deehan had a brief spell as Villa caretaker manager in 2002

Former goalkeeping coach Nigel Spink was another European Cup winner with Aston Villa back in 1982
Ten minutes into the 1982 final against Bayern Munich, Villa's first choice goalkeeper, Jimmy Rimmer, was injured and substitute keeper Spink was called into action, having only made one previous appearance in the first team. Spink performed superbly, keeping a clean sheet, and Villa won the game 1-0.
Spink went on to make 460 appearances for Villa
He joined the Latics from Birmingham City as goalkeeping coach in December 2007 following Steve Bruce up the M6 and he worked wonders with Latics current number 1 Chris Kirkland who put his superb form last season down to the coaching of former Villa man Spinks.
