Gary Caldwell Joins Wigan Athletic

Celtic defender Gary Caldwell has completed his move to Wigan Athletic after agreeing terms and passing a medical at the DW Stadium this morning.

The former Hibs and Newcastle defender snubbed a move to Championship club Middlesbrough to have a crack at the Premier League with the Latics and boss Roberto Martinez is absolutely delighted to have captured a player with Caldwell`s leadership qualities.

The 27 year old defender joins the Latics on a 4 ½ year deal and his £1 million transfer fee is good value in today`s inflated market.

Latics chairman Dave Whelan had no doubts that Caldwell would come to Wigan once he knew of the clubs interest, the pulling power of the Premier League is too strong, Whelan said: 'We knew the lad was keen to work again with Gordon Strachan at Middlesbrough but we wanted him to come here and made him a very good offer'

'You always think a player will fancy a crack at the English Premier League rather than the Coca-Cola Championship.'
