Martinez Turns His Attention to Kris Boyd

Wigan Athletic are once again being linked with a move for Rangers striker Kris Boyd who is currently sidelined with an injury picked up in the 3-3 Scottish Cup draw at Hamilton last Sunday.

Latics boss Roberto Martinez failed in a bid to get the Rangers leading marksman to the DW Stadium in the summer, it is understood that he was very close to agreeing a deal but it fell through at the last minute, now with Celtic pricing Scott McDonald out of the Latics reach it looks like Martinez is once again turning his attention across Glasgow to Boyd.

BBC Scotland are reporting that the Latics have made contact with Rangers as Martinez moves to bring some firepower to the club following the sacking of Marlon King left Wigan with just two recognised strikers in Hugo Rodallega and Jason Scotland.

Boyd is out of contract in the summer and Rangers boss Walter Smith is determined to do all in his power to get him to sign an extension and keep the striker at Ibrox, Smith told the BBC: 'We have quite a few players out of contract at the of the season, so we have to start trying to get those players tied up'

'Kris is the first one we have gone to and we hope we can get it sorted out.'

'The offer has been made and Kris and his agent are off to think about it now.'
