'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Whelan Endorses The Martinez Way For Wigan

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has been speaking to the press about how Latics boss Roberto Martinez is getting the team to play `sheer` football and he says he likes it a lot.

It`s no secret that the Premier League`s youngest manager wants the Latics to play what he describes as patient football and he wants his team to keep possession of the ball for as much of the game as is possible, obviously though this style of play takes a certain type of player to pull it off.

Whelan has been outspoken about some of former boss Steve Bruce`s signings for the Latics calling them iffy, but he says that Martinez is working very hard to bring the right players to the club and he is happy with the progress.

For the new system to work it needs the players to find space constantly through out games, keep moving and show awareness for the full 90 minutes and according to Whelan some of the current crop have found this difficult to do but he stresses that Martinez is working with all the players to get them comfortable with the style.

Whelan said: 'Roberto inherited a very, very iffy squad. I know Steve Bruce questioned me on it but it's true.

'Roberto has come in, and he is putting together the squad he wants.

'He is happy with the players he has brought in and happy with the players he has moved out.

'Roberto is a perfectionist, and he is always looking for perfection on the field.

'He wants to play sheer football back to front, he wants the ball knocked around, and it has taken a while for him to get that through to some of our lads.

'Roberto wants the players to find space constantly. Some players can do that easily and some players can't.

'But he is working with the players all across the squad, and it is showing. His style and the way he plays is good and I like it a lot.'
