Improved Bid For Chimbonda

Tottenham Hotspur manager Martin Jol has made an improved bid of £3 million for Wigan Athletic defender Pascal Chimbonda, matching the bid made by Manchester United's Alex Ferguson earlier in the week.

However the bid has been 'firmly rejected' by Latics manager who is sticking to the price tag of £6 million agreed with Chairman Dave Whelan.

Paul Jewell told the official Wigan Athletic website: 'Tottenham have made a bid but it has been firmly rejected. We are not being unrealistic. Look at every other player on the PFA team and try and place a value on their heads. We have made it clear that we do not want Pascal to leave but we will not stand in his way if the right offer comes along.

'Pascal has done very well for us, and we recognise that, but if it wasn't for this club taking a chance on him last summer, he would not be attracting such interest now. I have a responsibility to ensure that any deal for the player has to be right for Wigan Athletic.'
