Wigan Athletic - Meet Marcelo Moreno

Time to meet our latest new signing Marcelo Moreno who joined Wigan Athletic on loan until the end of the season from Shakhtar Donetsk on transfer deadline day, so just who is Marcelo Martins Moreno?

The 22 year old was born in Bolivia to a Brazilian father and actually represented Brazil at under 18 and under 20 levels but decided to represent the country of his birth at full international level, Moreno made his name playing at Brazilian clubs Vitória and then Cruzeiro before moving to Europe signing for Ukranian club Shakhtar Donetsk for 9 million Euros in May 2008.

Moreno hasn`t settled well so far in Europe, he has only made 14 appearances for Shakhtar Donetsk scoring 2 goals, he opted to join German club Werder Bremen on loan at the start of this season to see if life in Germany would better suit him, with just 5 appearances and no goals in the Bundesliga it would appear not.

Werder Bremen agreed to cut short Moreno`s loan spell allowing him the chance to come to the Premier League and team up with the Latics to see if he could make his undoubted talent flourish on perhaps the biggest stage for club football in the world.

At 6 feet 1 inch Moreno is a big physical presence on the pitch, he has a good goal scoring ratio in South America and for his country hitting the net 7 times in 17 appearances for Bolivia and scoring 49 goals in 68 appearances for his two clubs in Brazil.

The striker has previously been linked with moves to Europe`s elite including Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal and Manchester United and at 22 there is still time on his side.

Latics boss Roberto Martinez is certainly excited by his new acquisition, he says of Moreno: 'He is young, a superb athlete, good in the air, technically good with both feet and he will add something new to the squad.

'Hopefully he can adapt quickly to the demands of the Premier League and become a real quality addition to the Wigan Athletic squad.'

With just two late substitute appearances so far we haven`t seen enough to judge for ourselves but here`s hoping that Marcelo Martins Moreno proves to be a bigger success than the last player that Wigan Athletic brought over from Shakhtar Donetsk.
