James McCarthy Progresses To Full Squad

Wigan Athletic midfield man James McCarthy has been called up to the Republic of Ireland full international squad for their friendly game against Brazil nest week.

The Scottish born 19 year old has represented the country of his grandfather`s birth at under21 level but it was thought that there may be a chance that the talented youngster could be persuaded to swap allegiances to the country of his own birth at full international level.

Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni has moved to ensure that McCarthy stays in the green of the Irish by naming him in his 23 man squad.

Speaking to the press Trapattoni says that he is building for the future and a player of McCarthy`s talent and age will certainly figure in that plan, Trapattoni said: "The priority now is to build on the progress made during the last campaign and prepare ourselves over the coming months mentally and tactically for an important Euro [2010] campaign."

Republic of Ireland squad to play Brazil:

S Given (Manchester City), K Westwood (Coventry City), J Murphy (Scunthorpe United), R Dunne (Aston Villa), S Kelly (Fulham), K Kilbane (Hull City), K Foley (Wolves). S St Ledger (Preston), P McShane (Hull City), M Wilson (Portsmouth), G Cunningham (Manchester City), A McGeady (Celtic), Duff (Fulham), D Gibson (Manchester United), G Whelan (Stoke City), K Andrews (Blackburn Rovers), S Hunt (Hull City), L Lawrence (Stoke City), J McCarthy (Wigan), K Doyle (Wolves), R Keane (Celtic), S Long (Reading), L Best (Newcastle Utd)

Nice one Macca

he looks a very decent prospect. Apparently Spurs were interested in him prior to him joining you, but he definitely made the right decision toget an early chance with you guys. best of luck with ther remainder of the season.
