Caldwell Gets Scotland Call

Caldwell Gets Scotland Call

Wigan Athletic defender Gary Caldwell has been called up to the Scotland squad for their friendly with the Czech Republic next week and manager Craig Levein looks set to hand the former Celtic man his 37th cap.

The Scotland manager was less than complimentary about the centre backs at his disposal when speaking to the press and it looks like Caldwell will be cemented in the back four for his country for the foreseeable future. Levein said: "We don`t have a whole load of available and super-talented central defenders — that is just a fact, we are thin on the ground in this respect, so we need to find one or two young centre backs who can be the backbone of the team in the future."

His club boss Roberto Martinez though was a little more philosophical and he says that the experience that Caldwell gains at international level will only be of benefit for the Latics, Martinez said: 'Gary is a leader on and off the field and we will benefit from his experience when he represents his country.'

Scotland squad:

N Alexander (Rangers), C Gordon (Sunderland), D Marshall (Cardiff City); A Hutton (Tottenham Hotspur), C Berra (Wolverhampton Wanderers), G Caldwell (Wigan Athletic), P Dixon (Dundee United), G Kenneth (Dundee United), L Wallace (Heart of Midlothian), A Webster (Rangers), S Whittaker (Rangers), C Adam (Blackpool), S Brown (Celtic), G Dorrans (West Bromwich Albion), D Fletcher (Manchester United), P Hartley (Bristol City), L McCulloch (Rangers), J McFadden (Birmingham City), B Robson (Middlesbrough), K Thomson (Rangers), K Boyd (Rangers), S Fletcher (Burnley), C Iwelumo (Wolverhampton Wanderers), K Miller (Rangers).
