Paul Scharner Being Chased By Stoke City

Stoke City are believed to be chasing Wigan Athletic player Paul Scharner who is out of contract this summer and will be available on a free transfer.

Peter Reid was at the DW Stadium last Wednesday taking in the Latics vs Bolton game casting his eye over the Austria international captain who showed his versatility by starting the game in midfield and then dropping to centre back on 54 minutes when Titus Bramble had to leave the game with a tight hamstring.

Scharner is Latics longest serving outfield player and definitely a character of the club and his presence would be sorely missed if he left.

Would like Scharner to come to Stoke. Abit of a clear out happening this summer we think. Scharner coming in fofr free would be good.

I thought he was only leaving for a club which plays in the european competitions.. Stoke doesn't seem like a step up from us..

Last season he was moaning about Bruce's long ball tactics...now he's off to Stoke. I think he's played ok in the more defensive of the midfield roles but if we stay up and are going to stick with Martinez's vision and formation Scharner would be a problem because he wouldnt be good enough to play, but he wouldnt be happy with not starting.

I think he'll be off, as russialatic says he's not good enough on the ball.

Stoke played some nice football when they came to the DW. Tony Pulis has developed a side with a great team spirit, they passed the ball about nicely, and out played us in the game of football.

If you believe the papers, Roy Hodgson has been trying to sign Scharner for the past two seasons. Wouldn't be surprised to see him at Fulham next season. Though, I must admit that he would fit in quite well at Stoke.
