Paul Scharner Being Chased By Stoke City

Stoke City are believed to be chasing Wigan Athletic player Paul Scharner who is out of contract this summer and will be available on a free transfer.

Peter Reid was at the DW Stadium last Wednesday taking in the Latics vs Bolton game casting his eye over the Austria international captain who showed his versatility by starting the game in midfield and then dropping to centre back on 54 minutes when Titus Bramble had to leave the game with a tight hamstring.

Scharner is Latics longest serving outfield player and definitely a character of the club and his presence would be sorely missed if he left.

I thought he'd agreed a contract with us just not signed it yet?

Would like Scharner to come to Stoke. Abit of a clear out happening this summer we think. Scharner coming in fofr free would be good.

I thought he was only leaving for a club which plays in the european competitions.. Stoke doesn't seem like a step up from us..

hope this isnt true

Last season he was moaning about Bruce's long ball tactics...now he's off to Stoke. I think he's played ok in the more defensive of the midfield roles but if we stay up and are going to stick with Martinez's vision and formation Scharner would be a problem because he wouldnt be good enough to play, but he wouldnt be happy with not starting.
russialatic
I think he'll be off, as russialatic says he's not good enough on the ball.

Stoke played some nice football when they came to the DW. Tony Pulis has developed a side with a great team spirit, they passed the ball about nicely, and out played us in the game of football.
zakidaman
he cant go for free

If you believe the papers, Roy Hodgson has been trying to sign Scharner for the past two seasons. Wouldn't be surprised to see him at Fulham next season. Though, I must admit that he would fit in quite well at Stoke.
Teddy_KGB
Zakidaman, its true they are trying to play more football - but its still more direct than even Bruce ever was. For example, look at how many times Tuncay hasnt made the first eleven this season - when he's arguably one of the more talented players in the league. As for Fulham, I think that was Hodgson wanting him as a centre back whereas Scharner himself prefers the headless chicken role.
russialatic
having said all that I'll be sad to see him go. For all his media outbursts he plays with passion and never gives less than 100%.
russialatic
I hate Whelan who is a cheapskate owner that never keep our player. I hate Martinez who never know how to use players. Both sucks
