Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez says that the club, players, staff, directors and fans need to work together to pull the Latics out of the position that they find themselves in at the wrong end of the table.
At the moment it feels like backs to the wall, us against the world situation, typically for a side that is lacking confidence and down near the bottom of the league all the refereeing decisions appear to be going against the Latics and chances are going begging on the pitch.
In the Birmingham game a very dodgy penalty decision cost the Latics a share of the spoils and midfield man James McCarthy was taken out by a wild two footed challenge by Birmingham defender Liam Ridgewell, Ridgewell escaped without a talking to by match referee Anthony Taylor when at the very least a yellow card and maybe even a red would have been more appropriate.
Add to that Jermaine Defoe`s two footed lunge on Gary Caldwell the week before which nearly broke the Latics defenders leg, thankfully he is Scottish and Tom Huddlestone escaping a second yellow card because it would have resulted in a sending off you can see why questions are being asked.
Defoe`s opening goal for Spurs in that game was allowed by the assistant referee who kept his flag down despite Defoe being clearly offside, a decision which cost the Latics the game and the assistant referee has found himself suspended for three matches, scant compensation.
With chances being missed by Latics players either by bad luck, bad finishing or just good defending by the opponents it is getting twitchy as a look back shows the last win was a full seven games ago so it is vital that a togetherness on and off the pitch can show a club united and fighting together for the good of Wigan Athletic.
Martinez says that it is important to play with your head and not your heart, keep the focus and all will come right, Martinez says: "Now is the time to get together as a football club - the players, the staff, the directors and the fans - and pickup that extra five per cent and work harder to turn it around.'
'We need to make sure that we carry on with our level of performance and making sure we go into games being ourselves and not playing with our hearts instead of our heads.
'If you do that, the job becomes a lot harder. But the situation remains the same, and everything is still in our hands.
'We have allowed ourselves to drop into a difficult position in the table but it is time now to work hard and get the results that our performances deserve.
'It is down to everyone to pull together and ensure we are a stronger football club for the period. We have done it before and we'll do it again.'
