Ridgewell Escapes Punishment

Birmingham City defender Liam Ridgewell will not face further punishment for his two footed lunge on Wigan Athletic midfield man James McCarthy which not only cleaned out the Latics player but also led to the assistant referee Trevor Massey being struck on the head by a flying corner flag.

Ridgewell launched into the tackle after McCarthy had prevented a loose ball from going out of play near to the touch line and corner flag in Saturdays game at St. Andrews, the young Latics player was left writhing in agony clutching his ankle which took full force of the challange and Ridgewells follow through sent the corner flag flying through the air and the pole struck the assistant referee on the forehead.

Both McCarthy and Massey were left poleaxed on the floor and play was stopped for just over 6 minutes whilst they both recieved treatment

A wreakless and dangerous challange that at the time wasnt punished by a booking or sending off and following referee Anthony Taylors report on the game the FA have deemed that no further action is necassary.

Laticss boss Roberto Martinez was less than happy at the time of the incident and told reporters: 'It was a leg-breaking challenge - there are no two ways about it'

'It is difficult to understand how Ridgewell missed the ball, because it was not moving.

'For the referee not to at least caution him was strange."

Martinez will be positively fuming now

It's a Latics Player and not an Arsenal player, so there's your answer

I don't think Arsenal players are having much luck with lunging challenges at the moment. This is a disgusting decision, how was Alan Whiley allowed to ref this weekend after so many baffling errors at Spurs last week is greatly unsettling as well. I guess this just proves there IS a conspiracy against us!

It comes to something when the officials are willing to take a hit for the other team in order for them to get away with murder. It makes a complete mockery of the sport.

He's a lucky man Ridgewell. Bad challenge to say the least.
thayil
He was about a yard away from the ball. He just took out McCarthy, the flag an the official! How on earth did they not at least yellow card him!
