James McCarthy Goes Nuts For Brazil

Wigan Athletic youngster James McCarthy made his full international debut for the Republic of Ireland last night when he came on to the pitch as a 69th minute substitute to replace Liam Lawrence in the 2-0 defeat against Brazil

Although McCarthy was only in the game for a little over 20 minutes in the friendliest of friendlies he took the first significant step of what will undoubtedly be a long international career.

Speaking after the game McCarthy said he was delighted to have got on the pitch and that he is looking forward to more opportunities, he said: "I was delighted just to get on the park and make my debut, I just need to keep working hard with my club and hopefully get more international recognition.

"I was a bit nervous about being the new boy in the squad but everyone made me welcome.

"They are a good bunch of lads and I am delighted to make my debut.

"It is brilliant to be honest to make your debut against top opposition like Brazil and the only disappointment was the result."

With McCarthy being the new young breed for the Irish one ex Latic player was setting a record at the other end of his international career, Kevin Kilbane earned his 103rd international cap last night making him, alongside Shay Given, the Republic of Irelands most capped player.

Congratulations to both James McCarthy and Kevin Kilbane
