Roberto Martinez Meets The Fan Sites

Wigan Athletic fan sites Vital Wigan, Cockney Latic, Wiganer.net, Not a Patch On, Mudhuts and Ye Old Tree and Crown were involved in a little piece of history today (Thursday) when collectively we all met up with the Latics boss Roberto Martinez for an informal chat about, amongst other things, how the season is going, team formations, youth players, Johan Cruyff, his favourite pie and Wigan Athletic scarves.

Now this is definitely the first time that this has happened at the Latics and I am not aware of it happening at any other club either, not a fans forum, definitely not a press conference, the manager making himself available and going face to face with 6 hairy blokes talking about their football team.

The setting was the players canteen at the Christopher Park training ground, a relaxed and informal location, Latics media officer Ed Jones was also present and before Martinez arrived he gave us some clear instructions, "ask whatever you like, just be polite"

The chat with the gaffer lasted approximately 90 minutes, it was very interesting and Roberto answered every question that was put to him in a full and honest way

I don`t intend to go into detail here, Vital will run a series of articles over the next few days and the coming weekend covering the issues that were raised but one thing that I will report Roberto Martinez is 100% committed to Wigan Athletic and his vision for the club is refreshing after the negativity of some of our past managers.

Ed Jones gave a little insight into how our present boss`s outlook compares with our previous boss`s, an attendance of 17,000 at the DW Stadium would have led Steve Bruce to say: "there's 7,000 empty seats', whilst Roberto would jump up and down excitedly saying: ' Wow, I don't believe it, Latics have 17,000 people watching!'

The experience of meeting up with the manager was very good, his positive vibes are infectious and his thoughts and ideas for Wigan Athletic are extremely exciting, he seemed to enjoy himself and promised that the meeting with representatives from the sites will be a monthly occurrence, he said its important for the fans to know what`s going on and why certain things happen at the club.

The first of the articles will be published Friday 5th March 2010.
