Following an incident that led to Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Chris Kirkland being struck by a coin in Saturdays 1-0 win over Burnley at the DW Stadium the FA have launched an investigation and promised to ensure that the culprit, if they can be identified, will be banned from attending games in England.
The coin throwing occurred during the second half of the game and left Kirkland stunned and he glanced an angry look towards the Burnley supporters that were crowded into the North Stand at the DW Stadium, the big shot stopper though was philosophical about the incident and he says that he hopes the authorities will deal with it appropriately.
Kirkland said: "You don`t want that in the game. It`s not nice. But hopefully the authorities will deal with it.
"But how can you stop somebody from throwing something?
"There were 5,000 people there. The police can`t stop one individual from throwing something. We`ve seen it before and I`m sure we`ll see it again."
The FA though aren`t being as matter of fact about the incident and have requested reports from both the Latics and Burnley on the incident as well as match referee Mike Jones and if the individual responsible can be identified then they will be pushing for a banning order.
An FA spokesman said: "The first priority from our point of view would be ensuring any individual responsible was identified.
"We would like to see anyone found guilty of coin-throwing banned from attending football matches in this country."
Although this is a very serious incident it does highlight the fact that Burnley supporters have been throwing money away all season following the Clarets on their travels with Brian Laws men just claiming a solitary point away from Turf Moor
