Wigan Athletic - Martinez Pleased With Youth

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez spoke about his delight at the performance that a young Latics reserve side put in to defeat Liverpool in the game at the Robin Park Arena last night.

Graham Barrow`s young charges came out 3-2 winners but it was the performance that had Martinez purring, obviously delighted with the win but full of praise for playing `in the right manner` the boss says that the youngsters are full of potential and playing the way they are gives him an option to promote them to the senior side.

Speaking to the clubs official website Martinez said: 'It was very pleasing to watch the boys enjoy themselves and play the game in the right manner. In the second half I thought our boys showed huge belief, great arrogance and scored three very good goals'

'I told them after the game it's important to have the belief in what they're doing and to carry on working to those standards.

'At Wigan Athletic we want to make good use of the young talent we have and you can see from this performance the potential they have.

'We've seen the reserves play in a certain manner that is very similar to the first-team and that's the best way for them to develop and to give us the option of using them in the senior side.

'For that full credit must go to Graham Barrow and Dave Watson who have done a wonderful job with the youngsters at Wigan Athletic.'

It looks like the reserves have turned their season around in recent weeks

It is getting to the stage where the teams with a good youth policy will reap the benefits. Money will soon start falling if the real value of tv money is shared more fairly. Clubs like ours will survive with a good academy.
