Wigan Athletic have Premier League safety in sight for another season, life is good.
I have never for one moment considered that relegation this season was going to happen, I did believe that we would be close to the bottom three at various times but ultimately finish around 14th/15th spot in the table.
So with just 5 games of the season left I have no reason whatsoever to change my view, following yesterdays fantastic win for Burnley at the KC Stadium virtually condemning Hull the Latics with a win against Portsmouth on Wednesday will put themselves 7 points clear of the bottom three.
Those 7 points in effect represent 3 wins that either Hull or Burnley would have to muster coupled with us taking nothing from the remaining 4 games and seeing as neither Hull nor Burnley have anywhere near an 80% win rate I think it would be fair to assume we`d be safe.
There have been a lot of twitchy fans this past few weeks and I can fully understand that with the season coming to a close but in reality we have always had a bit of cushion keeping us away from the drop zone, now those same twitchy fans can go into party mode on Wednesday when we take on Portsmouth.
The Latics are expecting a bumper crowd and are doing all in their power to get supporters through the turnstiles so they can back the team, a final push and a good win will set up Roberto`s men nicely and an end of season surge up the table could be on the cards and wouldn`t it be lovely to finish above Bolton, who have some very difficult games left and still have to visit Chelsea, Stoke and Spurs.
So without taking Pompey, who were officially relegated yesterday, lightly, a professional and hard working performance should see the 3 points coming to the DW Stadium on Wednesday evening and so setting up a more relaxed end of season than some were perhaps expecting.
